Tandy is an Irish pet form of Andrew, which is not obvious and is well documented. It sits alongside Andy as one of the two ways the name was shortened, and it turns up in a rebel song that almost every Irish person can quote whether or not they know it is a name.

The story of Tandy
The Napper Tandy in the song was real. James Napper Tandy was a Dublin ironmonger who became one of the founders of the United Irishmen, fled to France ahead of arrest, was given a French general's commission, landed on the Donegal coast with a small force, discovered the rebellion had already been crushed, and left again the same night. He was later arrested in Hamburg, extradited, sentenced to death, and released because Napoleon made his release a condition of a treaty negotiation, which is a remarkable thing for a shopkeeper's son to have arranged. The song has kept his name alive for two hundred years and almost nobody who sings it knows any of that.
Meaning
Manly
Andrew is from Greek andreios, manly or courageous, built on the word for a man in the sense of a fighting man. The pet form carries the meaning without stating it. It became a surname in Ireland and then, in America, a given name for children of both sexes.

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The rhyming substitution that produced it, replacing the initial vowel with a consonant, is the same process behind Ted from Ed and Bob from Rob.

Fashion outlook
Tandy sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Short, warm and impossible to mispronounce.
- It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
- It has a documented Irish history and a real bearer behind it.
- The record carries it for boys as well as girls, so it signals nothing on a form.
- For a generation of Americans it is a chain of electronics shops before it is a name.
- It is a pet form and leaves nothing more formal on the certificate.
