Where it comes from

Our story of Tammye

Date palms are dioecious: individual trees are male or female, and only the females fruit. A grove left to the wind produces almost nothing, so date growing has meant hand pollination for as long as there has been date growing — a worker climbs each female tree and shakes or ties a male flower cluster into it. Assyrian reliefs from nearly three thousand years ago show winged figures doing exactly that beside a stylized palm, which is one of the earliest depictions of an agricultural technique anywhere. One male tree can serve fifty or a hundred females, so growers keep very few, and the best male trees are propagated as offshoots and have names. A fruit that has fed the Middle East for four millennia has never once been produced without somebody going up a ladder.

Tamara, Thomasina and Tamsin all yield this short form and have different origins. The record holds the short form alone, which leaves nothing to trace back to, and the added e marks the spelling as a made one.

Tammye sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1962, with 66 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Tammye sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables with front stress is easy to say and quick.
  • Tam detaches cleanly and works for a child of either sex.
  • It is warm and immediately readable at first sight.
What to consider
  • Tammy, Tami and Tammi are all commoner and will be written for it.
  • The added letter is silent, so the spelling must be given aloud every time.
  • It reads as a nickname, and people will ask what it stands for.
