Where it comes from

Our story of Tajuan

Taj is Persian for a crown, and it has spread across the whole area Persian administration and literature reached. It is in Turkish, in Urdu, in Hindi, in Arabic usage, and in dozens of compound titles and names — a crown of the realm, a crown of the faith, a crown of kings. The Persian word is old, going back to Middle Persian, and its own origin may be further east again. It turns up on the greatest building most people can name, where it is part of a woman's court title rather than her name, and it turns up in ordinary Indian given names where it means what it says. A single syllable for a piece of headgear became the standard marker of rank across half a continent.

The base is the Spanish form of John, from a Hebrew sentence-name. The prefix is a free American element with no content. The Persian word it resembles is a coincidence of spelling and there is no evidence any family meant it.

Tajuan sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1999, with 32 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Tajuan sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Back stress gives the name a firm landing and real carrying power.
  • Both halves detach as short forms and each is a standing name.
  • It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
What to consider
  • Tajuana, Tejuan and Tawan are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The j has two readings, so the name is said two ways.
  • Only the base carries a meaning, and it carries it at several removes.
