Where it comes from

The story of Tajah

The Taj Mahal is named for a person. The emperor's wife held the title Mumtaz Mahal, the chosen one of the palace, and the building put up over her grave took a shortened and altered form of it — crown of palaces, in effect, which is both a description of the building and a pun on her name. She died in childbirth with her fourteenth child while traveling with the army, and the tomb took the better part of two decades. The word for crown in her title is the same word that sits at the front of this name, which is a longer reach than most name books admit but a real one if the family meant it.

Crown

The Persian and Arabic word taj means a crown, and it is genuinely a name element across South Asia and the Middle East. Whether this American spelling descends from it or was built from the sound is not established, and the added h at the end belongs to no tradition that uses the word.

Tajah sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1999, with 72 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Tajah sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The word behind it is concrete and grand without being heavy.
  • It is short and easy for anyone to say.
  • It works for either child, which the record confirms.
What to consider
  • The silent h at the end does nothing and will be dropped by most writers.
  • The spelling is recorded for a few boys, but nearly every child with it is a girl.
  • Whether the Persian word is really behind a given family's choice is worth asking rather than assuming.
