Where it comes from

Our story of Tacy

The Latin verb tacere gives English tacit, an agreement nobody spoke, and taciturn, a person who does not. Its command form is tace, and the claim about this name is that families used it as an instruction, in the same spirit that produced Prudence, Temperance and Silence. Whether every family that used it knew the Latin is another matter. A name can start as a program and become simply a name within one generation, which is what happened to most of that set. The competing account, that this is Anastasia with everything after the first syllable worn away, is equally ordinary and equally undocumented. Both are plausible. Only one of them is funny, which is probably why it is the one people repeat.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Two accounts are current. One takes the name from the Latin tace, be silent, which English-speaking families of a certain religious temper did use as a name. The other takes it as a short form of Anastasia. The record holds the name from very early and explains neither.

Tacy sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1969, with 28 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Tacy sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Four letters and two syllables: easy to write and easy to learn to spell.
  • It is genuinely rare while containing nothing that anybody finds difficult to say.
  • It has a long documented presence in the American record rather than being a recent invention.
What to consider
  • If the Latin reading is the right one, the name is an instruction to be quiet, which lands differently on different people.
  • Two pronunciations are in circulation and the spelling settles neither.
  • It will be heard as Stacy and written that way by people catching it once.
