The story of Tabor
Mount Tabor rises abruptly out of the Jezreel valley and has been fortified, fought over and venerated for three thousand years. Christian tradition placed the Transfiguration on it, which made it a pilgrimage site, and its name traveled with the pilgrims. In 1420 the radical Hussites of Bohemia founded a fortified town south of Prague and named it Tabor, casting themselves as a people encamped on a holy mountain; its inhabitants, the Taborites, were the most militant wing of the movement and their general Jan Zizka was never defeated in the field. The town still exists, the surname Tabor spread from it across central Europe, and a separate English surname of the same spelling comes from the drum. American use draws on all of them.
