The story of Symantha
From 1873 Marietta Holley published a long series of comic books narrated by Samantha Allen, 'Josiah Allen's Wife', a sensible farm woman who argued for temperance and women's suffrage in a homespun voice; in their day they sold as well as Mark Twain. English writers use y in words borrowed from Greek — symphony, sympathy — so Symantha looks Greek on the page, though Samantha has no Greek origin. The spelling was used by American families in the second half of the twentieth century.
