The story of Sydni
The surname came first, then the man, then the harbor, then the name for children. Sidney was an English family name from a place in Surrey; it became a man's given name in the eighteenth century; a colonial minister carrying it had a cove on the far side of the world named for him, which turned the word into a city; and the city then made the name familiar to people who had never met an English Sidney. It went to American girls at the end of the twentieth century and, as always happens once a name crosses, the spellings multiplied — Sydney, Sidney, Sydni, Sydnee, Sidnie. This one keeps the y of the city and finishes with the shortest ending available.

the wide island
Two readings of the English surname. The likelier is Old English sidan ieg, the wide island or wide water-meadow, from a place in England. The older story derives it from Saint-Denis in Normandy, which is phonetically possible but not supported by the early records. Neither is settled.

The Kathlyn test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Sydni's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kathlyn climbed just as high around 1914, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kathlyn's path sketches the road Sydni is walking now.
Sydni sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off

- Sydney and Sidney are both far commoner and this spelling will be corrected constantly.
- It is one of the largest cities in the southern hemisphere, and that will be the first association.
- The name was a man's for two centuries, and a few people will still hear it that way.
