Syble
Feminine · “prophetess”
A sibyl was a woman who spoke prophecy, and the ancient world took them seriously enough to keep their books in the Capitol. The Cumaean Sibyl guided Aeneas through the underworld; Michelangelo put five of them on the Sistine ceiling alongside the prophets. Syble moves both vowels of the word around without changing how it is said.

The story of Syble
Christian writers found the sibyls useful: if pagan prophetesses could be read as having foretold Christ, then the classical world could be brought inside the Christian story rather than discarded. That is why they appear on the Sistine ceiling and in medieval hymns, and it is why Sibyl became an acceptable Christian name in the Middle Ages. English spelled it Sybil and Sibyl more or less at random for centuries. Syble moves the y forward and adds a final e, which is an American variation on a name that had never had a fixed spelling anyway.
Meaning
prophetess
Greek sibylla names a woman who utters prophecy, and the word's own origin is not recovered — it may not be Greek at all. Several sibyls were recognized in the ancient world and located at particular shrines: Cumae, Delphi, Erythrae. Rome kept a collection of Sibylline oracles and consulted them at moments of crisis. The name is that word, and the derivation is not disputed even though the word's own ancestry is.

Fashion outlook
Syble sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The classical history is vivid, documented and easy to explain in a sentence.
- Two syllables and no ambiguity in the sound once the spelling is seen.
- It works for either child in principle, though it goes almost entirely to girls.
- Sibyl and Sybil are the standard spellings and this will be corrected toward them.
- The rearranged vowels read as an error rather than a variant to most readers.
- The name belongs firmly to an earlier American century and has not returned.
