Where it comes from

The story of Svea

The Svear were one of two peoples — with the Götar — whose union made Sweden, and the country's name means their kingdom. Moder Svea, Mother Svea, appears as a national figure from the seventeenth century, usually helmeted with a shield. The name was given to Swedish girls in real numbers from the nineteenth century and reaches American records with Swedish emigration around 1900.

Meaning

Sweden, of the Swedes

From Svear, the name of the people whose territory became Sweden; Svea rike, the realm of the Swedes, gives the country's name Sverige. Mother Svea is the national personification, the Swedish equivalent of Britannia or Marianne.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled meaning tied to a real people and a national figure.
  • Four letters and two syllables, about as easy to write as a name gets.
  • Substantial turn-of-the-century American use with Swedish families.
What to consider
  • The sv opening is difficult for English mouths and gets a vowel inserted.
  • It names a country, which is a large thing to carry.
  • It is entirely unfamiliar outside Scandinavian communities in America.
