Suzi
Feminine · “lily”
Suzi carries two respellings stacked on a pet form: a z where the s is, and a bare i where the ie would be. Neither changes the sound. The name underneath means a lily, and the Hebrew word for it was itself borrowed, probably from Egyptian, which makes the flower a loan inside a loan.

Where it comes from
From An Egyptian word for the lotus to Suzi
The story of Suzi
The Egyptian word named the lotus, which is a water plant and was the central image of Egyptian religious art: it closes at night and opens in the morning, which made it an obvious symbol of rebirth, and it appears on columns, in poetry and on every temple wall in the country. Hebrew borrowed the word and applied it to a different flower, because the lotus does not grow in Palestine and the word had to attach to something. Greek and Latin took the Hebrew, English took the Latin, and by the time the name reaches a modern certificate the plant has changed twice and the meaning printed for it names a European garden flower that nobody in the chain was thinking of.
Meaning
lily
The Hebrew word behind Susanna means a lily, and the reading is settled. The word itself was probably borrowed into Hebrew from Egyptian, where it named a lotus rather than a lily, which is a distinction that matters botanically and did not survive the borrowing. Neither respelling in this form touches any of that.
How the name formed
- An Egyptian word for the lotus
- Borrowed into Hebrew and applied to a lily
- Susanna in Greek, Latin and English
- Suzi, with two respellings on a pet form
Pronouncing Suzi
SOO-zee
Two syllables, stress on the first. The z writes the sound the s in Susan already makes, since an s between vowels is voiced in English, so the respelling records what the standard spelling conceals rather than changing anything.

Suzi sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
