Where it comes from

The story of Susie

Susanna appears in the Greek text of Daniel in a story about a woman falsely accused and vindicated by cross-examination — a favorite subject for painters. English used Susan heavily from the eighteenth century, and Susie and Suky were its ordinary pet forms. American families registered Susie outright in the nineteenth century, and it stood in the top fifty for girls in the 1880s, with a second rise in the 1950s.

lily

From the Hebrew shoshannah. It is usually translated 'lily', but the word may originally have meant the lotus, and it is connected to a Semitic root for 'six', probably from the number of petals. Which flower was meant is not fully settled; that a flower was meant is.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Susie went to 101 girls in 2025, but Suzie is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 130, which makes it the 830th most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,081 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 12,364 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 15,914 for Susie itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The botanical meaning is unusually vivid for a name this old.
  • Susan and Susanna are both available as formal forms with very deep records.
  • Warm and immediately easy for a child to say and spell.
What to consider
  • Several spellings are established and none is dominant.
  • As a diminutive it stays informal unless Susan is on the certificate.
