Where it comes from

The story of Lillith

Lilith appears once in Isaiah among the desert creatures, and in Babylonian incantation texts as a demon that threatens women in childbirth. The Alphabet of Ben Sira, a medieval satirical text, made her Adam's first wife who left him for refusing to lie beneath him. Modern readings have taken her up. The name is in current use.

Meaningscholars disagree

of the night

From the Hebrew lilit, a night-demon named once in Isaiah 34, from a Mesopotamian lilitu. The resemblance to the Hebrew laylah, 'night', is probably a folk connection rather than the source; the word is Akkadian. Nothing is fully settled.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The Mesopotamian-to-Hebrew transmission is a genuinely interesting piece of history.
  • Lily is available as a softer short form that is fully current.
  • The Ben Sira story has been read very differently in different centuries.
What to consider
  • The traditional figure is a demon, and the associations are dark.
  • Lilith with one l is the standard spelling.
  • The connection to laylah, 'night', is probably folk etymology.
