The story of Suri
Suri has been a Yiddish diminutive of Sarah for centuries and remains common in Hasidic communities. Separately, suri names one of the two alpaca types, whose fleece hangs in long locks. The name became widely visible in America after a celebrity naming in 2006 and appears in the registers in current use.

rose; princess
Several routes. The Persian surkh gives a reading of 'red' or 'rose'. The Yiddish Suri is a diminutive of Sarah, 'princess'. Suri is also a Quechua-derived word for a long-fleeced alpaca. All are genuine and none is dominant for the modern name.

About 1 girl in 8,783 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 16,073 for Suri itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Rana test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Suri's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Rana climbed just as high around 1971, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Rana's path sketches the road Suri is walking now.
Suri sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
