Where it comes from

The story of Sudie

Susanna appears in the Greek text of Daniel in a story about a woman falsely accused and vindicated by cross-examination, a favorite subject for painters. English used Susan heavily from the eighteenth century, and American households produced a whole family of pet forms: Sue, Susie, Sudie, Suky. Sudie was registered as a legal name in its own right and peaked around 1885.

Meaningscholars disagree

lily

Through Susan and Susanna, from the Hebrew shoshannah. It is usually translated 'lily', but the word may originally have meant the lotus, and it is connected to a Semitic root for 'six', probably from the number of petals. Which flower was meant is not fully settled; that a flower was meant is.

Fashion outlook

Sudie has already lived its whole cycle: it rose, had its era, and has stepped off the charts. The fashion question is behind it — what lies ahead is the waiting room where revivals begin, once a name's first generation has grown distant enough for it to sound fresh again.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Susan and Susanna are both available as formal forms with very deep records.
  • The botanical meaning is unusually vivid for a name this old.
  • Soft throughout and easy for a very young child to say.
What to consider
  • It is strongly period-coded to the late nineteenth century.
  • As a diminutive it stays informal unless Susan is on the certificate.
