Stephone
Masculine · “a crown or wreath”
Stephone takes a name that has been said with the weight at the front for two thousand years and throws the weight to the back instead. The ending that does it was one of the most productive devices in American naming, and it changes a name more than any respelling of its vowels could.

The story of Stephone
The Latin form of this name, Stephanus, was taken as a printer's name by a family of French scholar-printers who shaped how the Bible looks on the page. Robert Estienne, who signed himself Stephanus, produced a Greek New Testament divided into numbered verses — the first edition to do it — and his son wrote that the work of dividing was done on a journey between Paris and Lyon. Whether that means on horseback or at inns along the road has been argued about ever since, because some of the divisions land awkwardly, cutting sentences in half. Either way the numbering stuck. Every chapter-and-verse reference anyone has used since comes from that trip, and the system was never revised because it had already spread too far to change.
Meaning
a crown or wreath
From Greek stephanos, which meant the woven wreath given to a victor at the games rather than a king's crown. The two ideas have been run together for so long that the distinction is usually lost, but the original object was made of leaves.

Fashion outlook
Stephone sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Back stress makes it land firmly and sets it apart from a very common name.
- The ancient name behind it is genuinely documented, meaning and all.
- Steph is available without any explanation needed.
- Stephan, Stefon and Stephon are all recorded and will be written for it.
- Strangers will default to the front-stressed reading on sight.
- The ph is a Greek letter written the Latin way, and some readers will simplify it to an f.
