The story of Stepanie
The account in Acts of the first Christian killed for the faith is unusually specific about the logistics. He is dragged out of the city, the witnesses take off their outer garments to throw more freely, and the text says they laid them at the feet of a young man named Saul. That is the first appearance in the New Testament of the man who becomes Paul and writes a third of it. The detail is doing deliberate work: the author wants the reader to have watched Paul hold the coats. He refers to it himself later, in a speech, without softening it. It is one of the places where an ancient narrative does something a modern one would — plant a minor figure at the edge of a scene so that his later arrival lands differently.
Meaning
a crown or wreath
From Greek stephanos, the woven wreath given to a victor rather than a king's crown. The h in the standard spelling marks a Greek letter that Latin wrote with two characters; dropping it leaves a p doing the work alone, which is what several European languages do anyway.
