Where it comes from

The story of Steffani

The Wren Boys were documented across Ireland, the Isle of Man and parts of France and Wales, and the explanations offered for the custom are all late: that a wren betrayed Saint Stephen by making a noise, or betrayed Irish soldiers to the Vikings by drumming on a shield. Folklorists generally take the bird-hunt to be much older than either story and the saint's day to be a Christian roof put over something pre-existing. The hunt is now symbolic, the birds are not killed, and the custom is still going in parts of Kerry.

Meaning

a crown or wreath

The Greek word behind Stephen is the wreath given to a victor. This spelling doubles the f and ends in a bare i, which is Italian in look and American in practice — the Italian form of the name is spelled with one f, and the ending belongs to the same fashion that produced Jodi and Toni. Neither change is audible.

How the name formed

  1. a Greek word for a victor's wreath
  2. the first Christian martyr carries it
  3. his feast day acquires a wren hunt in Ireland and Man
  4. Stephanie and its Italian relatives spread
  5. Steffani appears in the American record in the 1940s

Fashion outlook

Steffani sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Steff is available and works for a child of either sex.
  • The meaning is concrete, ancient and easy to explain.
  • The spelling is genuinely rare while the name is universal.
What to consider
  • Stephanie is far commoner and this spelling will be corrected constantly.
  • The bare final i dates a certificate to the second half of the century.
  • It reads as Italian and is not.
