Where it comes from

The story of Staci

Anastasia was a major name in the Greek and Russian churches; Eustace arrived separately through a legend about a Roman general and a stag with a cross in its antlers. English shortened both the same way, and Stacy served as a man's name into the twentieth century before shifting decisively to girls in the 1960s. The -i spelling belongs to the wave that also gave Kelli, Traci, Brandi and Sherri, and Staci peaked in the mid-1970s.

Meaningscholars disagree

resurrection

Read as short for Anastasia, the meaning is the Greek anastasis, 'resurrection', a name given in the early church to children born near Easter. Read as short for Eustace, it is the Greek eustachys, 'fruitful' or 'rich in grain'. Both are well documented and the short form does not choose.

Fashion outlook

Staci has already lived its whole cycle: it rose, had its era, and has stepped off the charts. The fashion question is behind it — what lies ahead is the waiting room where revivals begin, once a name's first generation has grown distant enough for it to sound fresh again.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two large and unrelated classical names stand behind it, which is unusual depth for a short name.
  • The tidiest of the four spellings, with nothing doubled or silent.
  • The sound is clean and carries well across a room.
What to consider
  • Four spellings were common at once, so the written form is never assumable.
  • The name is closely dated to the 1970s.
