Stacee
Feminine · “fruitful”
Stacee looks like a modern respelling of a modern name, and the name underneath is neither. Stacy was a man's name in England for centuries, a worn-down form of Eustace, and it stayed male until the middle of the twentieth century. The saint at the far end of it has a spectacular legend and, in the judgment of the church itself, probably never existed.

Where it comes from
From Eustace, from Greek, and a legendary saint to Stacee
The story of Stacee
Eustace, according to the legend, was a Roman general who went hunting, saw a stag with a crucifix between its antlers, converted on the spot, lost his wealth, his wife and his sons, got them all back, and was then roasted inside a bronze bull for refusing to sacrifice. It is a splendid story with a serious problem: there is no evidence any such person lived, the narrative borrows from at least two earlier ones, and when the calendar was revised in the twentieth century his feast was removed on exactly those grounds. The name outlived the saint. In medieval England it wore down to Stacy, which served as an ordinary man's name for generations before disappearing and then returning, in the nineteen sixties and seventies, as a woman's name with no memory of the earlier life at all.
Meaningscholars disagree
fruitful
If the parent is Eustace, the Greek elements mean something like well and fruitful or steady, and that is the standard reading. If the parent is Anastasia, which is also possible for the women's line, the sense is entirely different and belongs to a Greek word about standing up again. English arrived at the same short form from both directions, which is why the meaning depends on a family history the spelling does not record.

Fashion outlook
Stacee sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The sound is universally known and never needs explaining, whatever the spelling does.
- It has a genuine and rather surprising history behind it, which most names of its generation lack.
- Stace is a strong, flat short form that has aged better than the full name.
- Four spellings are in circulation and this is not the one people guess.
- It is tightly fixed to a stretch of the nineteen seventies in American ears.
- The meaning depends on which parent name a family had in mind, and the two are unrelated.
