Where it comes from

Our story of Sonji

The ji at the end is worth explaining, because it is one of the most misunderstood syllables in the world. In Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi and several other languages it is a particle of respect added to a name or a title — Gandhi-ji, mata-ji, a form of politeness rather than part of the name. Foreigners have been mistaking it for a name ending for two centuries. On this name it is doing something else entirely: an American spelling reaching for a letter that looks unusual at the end of a word, which j certainly does, since almost no English word ends in it. The name got its visibility elsewhere. A young woman carrying it married a heavyweight champion at the peak of his fame, and the marriage and its end were covered relentlessly for the two years they lasted.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source language. The ending resembles the Indian suffix ji, which is a mark of respect attached to names and not a name ending at all, and the resemblance is a coincidence. The name appears to have been made in America from the sound.

Pronouncing Sonji

SAHN-jee

Two syllables, stress at the front. The j is soft, as in jam, not as in the German or Spanish versions of the letter.

Fashion outlook

Sonji sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, distinctive and easy for anyone to say.
  • The final letter is unusual enough to make the name memorable on paper.
  • Nothing in the spelling is ambiguous.
What to consider
  • It will be heard as Sonya or Sandy and written as both.
  • Speakers of South Asian languages will read the ending as a mark of respect rather than part of the name.
  • There is no meaning to hand a child, only the history of the years it was visible.
