Our story of Sissy
The word is a baby-talk reduction of sister and it was purely warm for most of the nineteenth century: a pet name for a girl in the household, used across the English-speaking world and especially in the American South. What happened to it afterwards is one of the better-documented cases of a word being pushed downhill. Around the turn of the twentieth century it started being applied to boys as an accusation — of being girlish, and therefore of being weak — and within a generation that had become its main meaning in general speech. The pattern is common enough to be a rule of thumb: when a word about women or children acquires a second life, the second life is usually insulting. Some families kept using the name regardless, which is why it goes on appearing in the record long after the word had turned.

In most families this was what an older or younger sibling called a sister, and it attached to whatever her actual name was — commonly Cecilia, Frances or Elizabeth, but it could attach to anything. Registered on its own, it points back to nothing in particular.

Fashion outlook
Sissy sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is warm, short and understood immediately by anybody.
- Sis detaches as an even shorter form and is used the same way.
- Every letter does what English expects, so it survives being heard once.
- The word's other meaning is an insult and has been for a century.
- Cissy and Sissie are both recorded and the spelling will need giving.
- It reads as a nickname, which some working lives accommodate better than others.
