Where it comes from

The story of Sincere

Sincerus meant pure or unmixed in Latin — of wine, of metal, of intentions — and English took it in the sixteenth century for people rather than substances. The wax story has circulated for four hundred years and is not true. As a given name Sincere appears in American records from the 1990s onward, used for girls and boys alike, in the company of Justice, Legend and Promise.

Meaning

genuine, without pretence

From Latin sincerus, clean or unadulterated. The popular account deriving it from sine cera, without wax, as though describing unrepaired marble, is a folk etymology with no support; the second half of the Latin word has never been securely explained.

Sincere sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2009, with 91 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • An ordinary English word, so nobody has to be taught to say or spell it.
  • The real Latin history, and the false one, are both worth telling.
  • It works for a girl or a boy, which is useful before a birth.
What to consider
  • The Sin clip is unavoidable and unkind, and children will find it.
  • A quality name sets an expectation the child did not choose.
  • It is used for both sexes, so forms will sometimes guess wrong.
