Where it comes from

The story of Sidnee

Sir Philip Sidney, poet and soldier, was mortally wounded at Zutphen in 1586; according to the account of his friend Fulke Greville, when water was brought to him he passed it to a dying soldier with the words 'Thy necessity is yet greater than mine'. In 1859 Charles Dickens ended A Tale of Two Cities with Sydney Carton taking the place of another man at the guillotine: 'It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done.' The surname became a boy's first name, and in the later twentieth century it crossed to girls; Sidnee, with its double e, is one of the spellings made for daughters.

Fashion outlook

Sidnee sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Sounds like Sydney and Sidney, names everyone knows.
  • The double e marks it clearly as a girl's spelling.
  • Carries a long English history.
What to consider
  • Sydney and Sidney are the spellings people expect, so it will need spelling out.
  • Sydney is also a city, and people will ask about Australia.
  • Some will read the double e as a misspelling rather than a choice.
