Where it comes from

Our story of Shunta

The verb to shunt is probably related to shun, and the earliest senses are about moving aside or flinching away. Railways took it in the nineteenth century for moving a wagon onto another track, which is now the sense most people meet, and it produced shunting yards and the shunter as a job title. Then medicine borrowed it for a device that diverts fluid from one part of the body to another, and electrical engineering borrowed it for a path that diverts current. Four technical vocabularies, one idea, and underneath all of them a word about stepping out of the way.

Shunta sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1979, with 70 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Shunta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Six letters and two syllables: quick to write and easy to remember.
  • It is recorded for boys and for girls, so it does not force a reading on anyone.
  • It is read correctly at first sight by most English speakers.
What to consider
  • The front syllable is also an English verb meaning to avoid somebody, which will be noticed.
  • Two pronunciations are in circulation and the spelling settles neither.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing to answer with.
