The story of Shirly
Shirley Chisholm was the first Black woman elected to the American Congress and the first to run for a major party's presidential nomination. She ran on the slogan unbought and unbossed, was excluded from most of the televised debates until a court ordered otherwise, and won a share of the delegates at the convention with almost no money and no establishment support. She said afterwards that she had met far more discrimination as a woman than as a Black person in politics — a remark that was quoted against her at the time and has been quoted approvingly ever since.
