A surname has finished becoming a first name at the moment it starts taking pet endings. Nobody makes a diminutive of a family name; they make one of a person. Shirlie is that moment recorded in spelling, a surname softened into something a mother would call across a yard.

Where it comes from

The story of Shirlie

The name's most famous bearer had a drink named after her and spent decades objecting to it. A restaurant is said to have mixed the grenadine and ginger ale for the child film star some time in the nineteen-thirties, and the name stuck to it; she had no part in inventing it, said plainly that she found it far too sweet, and went to court when a bottling company tried to sell it commercially under her name. She later served as an American ambassador twice over, which is the part of her life she preferred to be asked about. The name itself had already changed sex by then, going from a man's surname to a woman's given name inside two decades, and the pet forms followed it across.

Meaning

Bright clearing

Old English scir, bright or clear, and leah, a clearing in woodland. It was a place before it was a family and a family before it was a person, which is the usual order. The pet ending on this spelling adds nothing to the meaning and everything to the register: it is the difference between a name on a deed and a name at a kitchen table.

Pronouncing Shirlie

SHUR-lee

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The -ie and -ey endings are said identically; the choice between them is visual, and in American records the -ie spelling reads as the more familiar and less formal of the two.

Shirlie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1935, with 60 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Shirlie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is completely established in English and never needs repeating.
  • Shirl and Lee are two short forms with nothing in common, one blunt and one soft.
  • The meaning is concrete and can be given to a child in two words.
What to consider
  • The -ey spelling is standard and this one will be corrected by nearly everybody who writes it.
  • The name is tied to one film star and one generation, and both associations are strong.
  • A pet form on a certificate leaves nothing more formal underneath for adult life.
