Where it comes from

The story of Shirleyann

Shirley Temple grew up to be Shirley Temple Black, and she was in Prague on a visit when Soviet tanks rolled in to end the Prague Spring; two decades later she returned as the American ambassador to Czechoslovakia in the year its Communist government fell. Another Shirley, the writer Shirley Jackson, published The Lottery in The New Yorker, and the magazine was flooded with more angry and bewildered mail than any story it had printed before. Shirleyann ties their name to Ann, as many American families joined two names into one.

Shirley and Ann joined: a bright clearing and grace

Shirley is an English place-name joining lēah, a clearing, to either scīr, bright, or scīr, a shire; both readings are argued. Ann comes from Hebrew Hannah, grace.
