Where it comes from

Our story of Sherrye

Sherry is not vintage wine, and the reason is a system of barrels called a solera. The butts are stacked in rows; wine is drawn for bottling only from the bottom row, that row is topped up from the one above, and so on, with new wine entering at the top. Nothing is ever emptied. A solera that has been running for a century therefore contains a diminishing fraction of wine from every year it has operated, mathematically never reaching zero — so a bottle drawn today holds a trace of wine made before anybody now living was born. The purpose is consistency rather than romance: the blend evens out good years and bad, and a house's style stays the same across generations. Madeira and some balsamic vinegars are made the same way.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The name it respells arrived in twentieth-century American use without a traceable source; French cherie and the English word for the wine are both offered and neither can be shown. The added e is silent and marks the spelling as a made one.

Pronouncing Sherrye

SHEH-ree

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The added e is completely silent and does not make a third syllable, though the spelling invites one.

Fashion outlook

Sherrye sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is entirely familiar, so nobody has to be taught it.
  • Two syllables with front stress is easy and quick.
  • Sherry is available as a short form and is a standing name.
What to consider
  • Sherry, Sherri and Cherie are all commoner and will be written for it.
  • The added letter invites a third syllable that is not intended.
  • The name has no established etymology, so there is nothing to give.
