The story of Sheronda
Welsh uses dd as a single letter of its alphabet, and it stands for the sound at the start of the English word this, as against the different sound at the start of thin. English writes both with th and most English speakers cannot hear that they are different until it is pointed out, so a Welsh name crossing into English loses the distinction and one of the d's with it. Rhondda became Rhonda, a woman's name with no Welsh left in it, and by the middle of the last century it was ordinary in America, helped along by a pop record in nineteen sixty-five that put it in front of everybody at once. American naming then did what it does with any name that becomes common: it treated it as material, and attached a front syllable to it.

Noisy river, at two removes
The Welsh valley takes its name from the river running through it, and the river's name is generally read as the noisy or chattering one. Whether an American Sheronda descends from that at all is a different question: the middle of the name matches, the front does not come from Welsh, and no record preserves what a family had in mind. The valley is the only part with a documented meaning.

Fashion outlook
Sheronda sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- A settled American rhythm, easy to say and impossible to mispronounce once it has been heard.
- Ronda is a full name sitting inside it, ready to use whenever the longer form is not wanted.
- The middle of the name has a genuine and checkable history, which is more than most names of its type can offer.
- At least three spellings of the same sound exist, so the name will need spelling out on every form.
- It is closely dated to one American generation and reads as a mother's name rather than a daughter's.
- The Welsh connection is real for the middle of the name and not for the whole of it, which takes explaining.
