Where it comes from

The story of Sherita

American naming built a large family on this pattern in the middle of the twentieth century, and the pattern is more interesting than any single member of it. English stress is front-loaded: Margaret, Elizabeth, Dorothy, Barbara all lean forward. The borrowed ending forces the stress backward, so that Sherita, Juanita, Lakita and Vernita all move on the second beat, which is why the group sounds so unlike the names around it. Sherita takes the Sher- opening that also gave Sheree, Sherilyn and Sherita's near neighbor Sharita, and the two spellings of that first vowel, e and a, have been alternating ever since.

Meaningnot established

Not established

There is no inherited meaning. The name was assembled in twentieth-century America from a front syllable that is not a word and an ending borrowed from Spanish, and neither part carries a sense of its own.

Fashion outlook

Sherita sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The stress pattern gives it a lift that most English names of the same length do not have.
  • Rita is a ready short form with a history of its own.
  • Every sound in it is ordinary and the spelling follows the sound closely.
What to consider
  • Sherita and Sharita are said almost identically, so the first vowel will always be asked about.
  • There is no meaning and no older tradition to pass on.
  • It reads clearly as a name of the second half of the twentieth century.
