The story of Sherill
The Oneida Community was founded in the 1840s by a preacher who had decided that Christ had already returned and that his followers were therefore perfectible. They held all property in common, practiced what they called complex marriage, and organized childbearing by committee. It lasted about thirty years, collapsed under internal pressure and outside prosecution, and reorganised itself as a joint stock company making animal traps and then silverware. The company outlived the commune by more than a century, and the town it built is a city with a few thousand people in it.
