The story of Sherida
Richard Brinsley Sheridan wrote two of the best comedies in English before he was thirty, then gave up the theater for politics and spent three decades in Parliament as one of its finest speakers. He owned Drury Lane, rebuilt it once, and watched it burn in 1809 with debts he never cleared. The remark about the fireside is the line everybody remembers, and it is entirely in character: he was famous for the quickness of his answers and for never having any money.
