Sherese takes an ending that came into English attached to one French name and puts it to work on its own. The result looks French, is said in English, and was made in America — a combination the middle of the last century produced over and over.

Where it comes from

Our story of Sherese

English has another -ese, and it is worth keeping the two apart, because they look identical and do entirely different work. The one in Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese and Milanese means belonging to a place. The one in journalese, legalese and officialese means talking in a particular way, usually badly. Neither is the ending in this name. Hers is French, the -èse of Thérèse, which is simply the tail end of a borrowed word and means nothing on its own — and that is a freedom rather than a loss. The name was built for its sound: a soft opening, a long middle vowel, a clean stop at the end. The sound it reaches for was in the air; a number-one record called Cherish was familiar to everyone in those years, and the whole family of names with that shape was busiest in the same stretch.

Meaningnot established

Not established

There is no source word. The ending comes from Thérèse by way of Cherise and Charisse; the front is the Sher- that English already had from Sheryl, Sherry and Sherrie. Neither half brings a meaning with it. What looks like a French name is a pair of familiar American pieces.

Sherese sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1980, with 51 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Sherese sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The back stress gives it a strong finish, which short names often lack.
  • It reads as elegant without using a single sound that is hard for an English speaker.
  • It is genuinely uncommon while sounding entirely familiar.
What to consider
  • Cherise, Charisse and Sharice are all in the same room, and her spelling will be swapped for one of them often.
  • The final sound is ambiguous on paper — people will guess at an s or a z until they hear it.
  • There is no meaning behind it to hand over, only the honest account of how it was put together.
