Shepherd
Masculine · Old English roots · “sheep herder”
Shepherd is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 7,785 boys against 30 girls since 1880.
Shepherd began as a job: the person who kept the sheep, a trade so common in medieval England that it left one of the country's most widespread surnames behind. It is one of the few names you can read aloud and immediately understand, and in English it comes trailing the language of Psalm 23 and the Good Shepherd of the Gospels. Two firm syllables, the second one soft — and a ready-made short form in Shep that has been in use for generations.

The story of Shepherd
The word is Old English, and the occupation was everywhere, so when English speakers began taking surnames from trades in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, Shepherd and its variants attached themselves to families across the country. It crossed to North America with those families and settled into the long American habit of moving surnames to the front — the same road traveled by Mason, Carter and Cooper. As a given name it has a thin but genuinely unbroken record in US records going back to the nineteenth century, then a sharp modern rise as word-names and occupational names came back into favor. Its Christian resonance has never been far off: in English-speaking churches, shepherd is a standing image for care and for pastoral office, and 'pastor' is simply the Latin for the same job.

The Orlando test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Shepherd's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Orlando climbed just as high around 1975, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Orlando's path sketches the road Shepherd is walking now.
Shepherd is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Everyone can read it on sight and say it correctly the first time, because it is an ordinary English word.
- Shep is a ready, established short form, so the name comes with a casual version built in.
- A very long record in English as a surname, which makes it familiar to the ear even where it is rare as a first name.
- Fits neatly beside other occupational first names in current use, so it reads as contemporary without being invented.
- Works across the English-speaking world with no re-explaining or respelling.
- Three spellings compete — Shepherd, Shepard and Sheppard — and the silent h is the usual casualty. Expect to spell it out fairly often, and to correct forms that drop the middle h.
- German Shepherd is the first thing some people will think of, and a few children will make the joke. It tends to be a passing tease rather than a lasting one, but it is worth knowing in advance.
- The biblical association is strong in English. For some families that is part of the appeal; if you would rather the name not read as a statement of faith, it may not stay quiet.
- Almost everyone carrying it right now is young, so it currently sounds like a name for a small child rather than an inherited one. That is a matter of timing, not of the name — it has adult-sounding weight when it gets there.
