Where it comes from

Our story of Sheniqua

Somebody will tell you that unique cannot be qualified — that nothing can be very unique or rather unique, because the word is absolute. That rule was invented in the nineteenth century by American usage writers and is not much older than the pencils they wrote it with. The word came into English from French in the seventeenth century meaning single or sole, and writers of every period have modified it freely; the Oxford dictionary's own citations include qualified uses from well before the rule existed. What happened is that a group of commentators decided the word ought to be logical, and the rule stuck in schools because it is easy to teach and easy to enforce. English is full of these: the ban on splitting an infinitive was lifted from Latin, where infinitives are one word and cannot be split.

No source is documented. Both pieces are free American elements. Glosses attaching this family to Arabic, Swahili or Hebrew are added afterwards, and the tell is that they name a specific language without producing a word from it.

Fashion outlook

Sheniqua sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Middle stress on three syllables is the easiest rhythm English offers.
  • Several short forms come out of it and they sound completely different.
  • The spelling is phonetic by English rules and can be written from hearing.
What to consider
  • Shanika, Sheneka and Shaniqua are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The name is firmly dated to the decades it was made in.
  • No meaning can honestly be given, and the glosses circulating for it are invented.
