When the poet drowned off the Italian coast, the body was burned on the beach — quarantine law required it — and a friend reached into the fire and pulled out the heart, which had not burned. It went eventually to his widow, who is said to have kept it wrapped in a copy of one of his poems in her writing desk for the rest of her life, and it was buried with their son decades later. Whether the organ was the heart or the liver, which is the more likely candidate for something that survives a fire, has been argued about ever since. The family's other literary achievement is better documented: she wrote the first science-fiction novel at eighteen, on a wet holiday, for a bet.
