Where it comes from

Our story of Shawnette

A shawl is a Persian and Urdu word, and the garment reached Britain through the Kashmir trade, where fine goat-wool shawls were woven in patterns that European mills then copied so successfully that the pattern is now named after a Scottish town. A different Persian word, shalwar, gave English the loose trousers in shalwar kameez, and the two words are related only distantly if at all, having taken separate routes into separate parts of the English wardrobe vocabulary. English clothing words are like this throughout: pyjama, dungaree, khaki, chintz, calico and bandana all came in through the same trade, and most speakers have no idea any of them are borrowed.

Not established

The front is presumably from Shawn and the ending is the borrowed French diminutive, used freely. Nothing documents this particular pairing.

Fashion outlook

Shawnette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Shawn and Nettie are both available as short forms and both are established.
  • The stress is unmistakable, so it is rarely mispronounced on a first reading.
  • It is soft throughout with nothing difficult to say.
What to consider
  • Shonette, Shaunette and Seanette are all in the record and will be confused with it.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing to answer with.
  • It belongs audibly to one stretch of American naming, which places it in time for some listeners.
