Shawne is the American spelling of an Irish sound with a silent e added, and the e settles nothing: the record holds this spelling for boys and for girls, with the boys well in front. What it sits near in the dictionary is an instrument almost nobody has heard of and everybody has heard.

Where it comes from

Our story of Shawne

A shawm was the loud double-reed instrument of medieval and Renaissance town bands, the ancestor of the oboe, and its name came through French from the Latin calamus, a reed. The same Latin word went through French a second time and produced chalumeau, which is now the name for the clarinet's lowest and warmest register. One reed, two borrowings, five hundred years apart, and the second one is still in every orchestral score in the world. Shawne has nothing to do with either; it is a modern American spelling of an Irish sound. But the coincidence is worth a minute, because it is a small demonstration of how English works: the same word can walk in twice and end up in two different rooms.

Meaningnot established

Not established

If the name follows Seán, the Irish form of John, then the meaning belongs to John and is a settled one. If this spelling was arrived at independently, as several in its family were, there is nothing behind it at all. The record does not distinguish the two cases, so no reading can honestly be given for this spelling on its own.

Shawne sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1969, with 47 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Shawne sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is entirely familiar, so it is never mispronounced by anyone who has heard it once.
  • It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms rather than merely permits.
  • It is short, easy to write and easy for a child to learn to spell.
What to consider
  • The silent e will be dropped by nearly everyone writing the name from speech.
  • That same e leads some readers to expect a two-syllable name, and they will say it that way until corrected.
  • It leans to girls, but a real share of children with this spelling are boys, so forms will sometimes guess wrong.
