Wanda came to America with Polish immigration in the nineteenth century and was, for two generations, a marker of Polish families in Chicago, Detroit and Buffalo. Then it stopped being Polish. By the middle of the twentieth century it was an ordinary American name with no particular ethnic reading, which is exactly the condition a name has to reach before other naming systems can build on it — you cannot use a piece that still belongs to somebody. Shawanda, Lawanda and Tawanda all date from after that point, which is not a coincidence.
