Our story of Shauntae
Taupe is the French word for a mole — the animal, not the mark — and the color is simply the color of its fur: a grey-brown that is neither, which is exactly what makes it useful to decorators and impossible to agree on. English borrowed it around the start of the twentieth century and immediately began drifting: American paint charts now use taupe for shades ranging from warm beige to a definite purple-grey, and the word has effectively become a claim about sophistication rather than a description of a color. The mole itself is worth the detour: it is nearly blind, digs with hands turned permanently outward, eats its own weight in worms most days, and keeps a larder of worms bitten to paralyze but not kill them, which can hold several hundred at a time.

The base is an American spelling of the Irish form of John, which carries a Hebrew meaning at several removes. The ending is a free element used to throw the stress onto the last syllable. Neither the combination nor this particular spelling has a documented source.
Pronouncing Shauntae
shawn-TAY
Two syllables with the stress at the back. The ae at the end says a long a, which English has no other way of writing in final position.

Fashion outlook
Shauntae sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Back stress gives the name a firm landing and real carrying power.
- Both halves detach as short forms and each works for either sex.
- The sound is entirely familiar, so nobody has to be taught it.
- At least four spellings of this sound are in the record and all will be written for it.
- The spelling is recorded for a few boys, but nearly every child with it is a girl.
- Only the base carries a meaning, and it carries it at several removes.
Nobody names a baby alone.
