Shatara joins a productive American front to a syllable that is a real name in at least three unrelated places. Tara is the ceremonial hill of the Irish kings, a Sanskrit word for a star and a Buddhist figure, and the plantation in a very famous American novel. None of them is the source here, and the sound is doing all the work.

Where it comes from

Our story of Shatara

The Irish hill is worth the detour. It is a low ridge in County Meath with earthworks on it going back to the Neolithic, and it functioned for centuries as the ceremonial center of Irish kingship: a place where a king was made rather than where he lived. A standing stone on it was said to cry out when the rightful king touched it, which is the kind of claim that survives precisely because it cannot be tested. The site was excavated in the nineteen hundreds by a group who believed the Ark of the Covenant was buried there, and they did considerable damage before being stopped. None of this has anything to do with the name on the certificate, which was assembled in America from pieces that were fashionable at the time, and saying so is more useful than borrowing somebody else's hill.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No language supplies a source for the combination. The front is a piece of American name-building and the back is a syllable that resembles several real names without descending from any of them. Reference works offering an Irish or Sanskrit derivation are reading the resemblance. The accurate description is a made name whose components were both in wide circulation.

How the name formed

  1. A productive American front syllable
  2. A back syllable resembling several unrelated names
  3. Shatara and Shatarra in the registers
  4. The family receding across one generation

Pronouncing Shatara

shuh-TAR-uh

Three syllables with the stress in the middle and a broad a in it. Some families put the stress on the last syllable instead, which the spelling does not rule out and which produces a noticeably different name.

Shatara sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1986, with 159 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Shatara sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is transparent and easy for speakers of almost any language.
  • Tara is available inside it as a complete and internationally recognizable name.
  • The rhythm is even and carries well when said in full.
What to consider
  • There is no meaning to give, and three tempting ones belong to other names.
  • The stress is not fixed by the spelling and strangers will guess.
  • It is firmly of one stretch of American naming.
