Where it comes from

The story of Sharona

The persimmon sold in European shops as Sharon fruit is an Israeli cultivar of an East Asian tree, bred and marketed under the name of the plain where it was first grown commercially. The renaming was a deliberate export decision and it worked: shoppers who would not have bought a persimmon bought a Sharon fruit, and a good many of them still believe the two are different species. The cultivar is genuinely different in one respect — it has been bred and treated to remove the astringency that makes an unripe persimmon unpleasant, so it can be eaten firm — which is the commercial argument for the separate name. The tree is Chinese and Japanese in origin. The plain is in the Levant. The name on the label joins them because the marketing department preferred it to the botany.

Meaning

of the plain of Sharon

The Hebrew name belongs to the coastal plain between the hills and the Mediterranean, and it is a description of the ground rather than a quality. The added final vowel is a modern American device for lengthening a name and carries nothing of its own.

Pronouncing Sharona

shuh-ROH-nuh

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The added vowel shifts the weight off the first syllable, which is where the shorter name carries it, so the two sound noticeably different.

Sharona sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1980, with 68 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Sharona sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Middle stress on three syllables is the easiest rhythm English offers.
  • Three short forms come out of it and each is a complete name.
  • It is a real place name with a documented and concrete sense.
What to consider
  • Sharon is far commoner and will be written for it.
  • The added vowel moves the stress, so the two names are not interchangeable in speech.
  • A song fixed this exact spelling in a lot of heads for a long time.
