Sharol

The story of Sharol
The medieval carole was a chain or ring of dancers moving to a song that one of them led, and it was danced in churchyards and streets as well as halls. The church disapproved of it for centuries — there are sermons about it, and a legend about dancers in a churchyard cursed to keep dancing for a year. What survived when the dancing stopped was the tune and the verse form, which is why carols have refrains: the refrain is where the whole ring joined in.

The name looks like a blend of two that were both fashionable in the 1930s and 1940s, and it may be one; it may equally be Carol with a different front or Sharon with a different back. Carol itself is two names in one: the English word, and the feminine of Charles by way of Carolus, and even that pair has been confused for two centuries.

Fashion outlook
Sharol sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
