Sharlyn takes a Charlene front and substitutes one ending for another. The -ene ending was the fashionable one when the base name was built; the -lyn ending replaced it a decade or two later on name after name, and the substitution is visible across the whole register. It is one of the clearest cases of an ending being swapped rather than a name being coined.

Where it comes from

The story of Sharlyn

Charles has produced more women's names in America than in any European country, and by a wide margin. French has Charlotte and Caroline and stops; English took both and then built Charlene, Charla, Charlize, Sharla, Sharlene, Charleen and this one, mostly in the twentieth century and mostly by attaching whichever ending was current. The reason is structural rather than cultural: American naming treats a stem and an ending as separable, so a popular man's name becomes a stem and every fashionable ending gets tried on it in turn. European systems, which inherit names whole, cannot do that. The result is that a name with two established feminines in France has a dozen in the United States, most of them datable to within about five years by their endings alone.

Meaning

free man, in the feminine

The front descends from the Germanic word behind Charles, which meant a man of the free but landless class. The reading is settled and slightly awkward, since it describes a rank in the masculine. The substituted ending contributes nothing; it marks a decade rather than a meaning, which is what most American endings do.

How the name formed

  1. A Germanic word for a free man, behind Charles
  2. Charlene built with the fashionable ending of its decade
  3. The -lyn ending substituted a decade later
  4. Sharlyn and Sharlene side by side in the registers

Pronouncing Sharlyn

SHAR-lin

Two syllables, stress on the first. The sh at the front writes the sound that the ch of Charlene spells, which is the same sound written two ways, and this spelling removes the ambiguity.

Sharlyn sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1950, with 39 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Sharlyn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spelling tells you the opening sound, which the ch version does not.
  • Lyn and Charlie are two very different short forms and both stand alone.
  • The sound is entirely familiar and needs no explaining.
What to consider
  • Sharlene and Charlene are both commoner and this will be converted into one.
  • The ending dates the name quite precisely to a stretch of years.
  • There is no meaning beyond the base name's, and that one describes a rank.
