The story of Sharise
Tula Finklea of Amarillo, Texas, married her ballet teacher Nico Charisse in 1939, and as Cyd Charisse she became one of the great dancers of the MGM musical. She is one of the very few to have partnered both Fred Astaire, in The Band Wagon and Silk Stockings, and Gene Kelly, in Singin' in the Rain and Brigadoon; in Singin' in the Rain she dances a long sequence without speaking a line. The name appears in the American record in the years she was on screen, in several spellings — Charisse, Sharisse, Cherise and Sharise among them — though nothing records what any family had in mind.
