Where it comes from

The story of Sharee

The name has an accidental double life. Written this way it is also how the Bengali word for the garment English calls a sari is transliterated: shari or sharee, from the Sanskrit for a strip of cloth, worn across South Asia for two thousand years and still the ordinary word for it in Bengali. The American name has nothing to do with that; it was assembled in the twentieth century from a familiar opening and an ending that spells out its own vowel. But the two spellings meet on the page, and a Sharee in Dhaka and a Sharee in Ohio are reading very different things.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The Cher- branch can be read as the French cherie, a dear one. The Shar- branch cannot be read that way, because the vowel is wrong for French; it is more likely built from Sharon or Sharon's opening syllable, or assembled outright.

Sharee sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1979, with 159 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Sharee sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The ending removes any question about how the name finishes.
  • It is short, easy to say and easy to spell once heard.
  • Both short forms are usable and sound nothing like each other.
What to consider
  • Sherry, Sheree, Sharie, Cherie and Charee are all near neighbors and are confused constantly.
  • There is no meaning to pass on, and the French reading that people assume does not fit this vowel.
  • It reads as a name of the middle of the twentieth century.
