Shanteria
Feminine
Shanteria is assembled from three pieces — a front, a middle and an ending — none of which is a word in any language. The middle of it does sit next to a French verb about singing, and that verb produced an English noun with an unexpectedly specific history.

Our story of Shanteria
The French verb for singing gave English chant, enchant, incantation, descant and a less obvious one. Cant — meaning the private vocabulary of a trade or a class, and then insincere pious talk — appears to come from the same root, and the route is documented: it was first used for the whining sing-song delivery that beggars adopted when asking for alms, a specific and recognizable tone rather than a set of words. From there it moved to the secret argot that thieves and pedlars used among themselves, which is how it appears in the Elizabethan pamphlets about the underworld, complete with glossaries. Only later did it come to mean the smug religious language of people who did not mean it. Three quite different insults, one root, and underneath all of them somebody singing.

No source exists to report. The elements are all free American pieces, and the French resemblance is a matter of sound rather than descent. Readings that give this family a French or a Latin meaning are supplied afterwards by people who assume a name must have one.

Fashion outlook
Shanteria sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Four syllables give it a formal length and three quite different short forms.
- The stress falls where an English reader expects, so first attempts land.
- Shan detaches cleanly and is a complete name.
- Shanterria, Chanteria and Shanteria are all recorded and will be written for it.
- The syllable count is unstable, so the name gets said two ways.
- No meaning can honestly be given for any of the three pieces.
