Where it comes from

The story of Shant

Armenian surnames are patronymic and take the suffix -ian or -yan, from a possessive ending, so Kevorkian is of Kevork, Petrosian of Petros, and Sarkisian of Sarkis. The ending is so consistent that it functions as an ethnic marker worldwide, from Los Angeles to Beirut to Moscow, which is unusual: most European surname systems produced a mixture of patronymics, occupations and place names, while Armenian went almost entirely one way. The given names sit alongside a deep native stock that survived Persian, Byzantine, Ottoman and Soviet rule, kept in place by a church that has used Armenian in its liturgy since the alphabet was created for that purpose in 405. Shant belongs to that stock and means lightning.
