Shannel
Feminine · “Channel”
Shannel writes with sh the sound that French writes with ch, which is a repair rather than a distortion. English ch is the sound in church; French ch is the sound in machine. A name borrowed by ear from French and spelled by ear in English will end up looking like this.

The story of Shannel
The woman who made the surname famous was not called Chanel by her family; she was Gabrielle, born in a poorhouse in western France and raised in an orphanage after her mother died, and she picked up the name she used from a song she sang in a cabaret. She built a house on the principle that women's clothes should let them move, took jersey, which was underwear fabric, and made outerwear of it, and put her initials on everything. The surname is now one of the most recognizable words in the world and belongs to a company rather than to a person. American families respelling it as a given name were taking the sound and leaving the trademark, which is the only way to use it at all.

Channel, or pipe
If the name is a respelling of Chanel, the French surname comes from a word for a channel or a conduit, and identified a family living by one. If it is instead built from the same American materials as Shanelle and Shanice, it has no meaning at all. Both accounts fit, and the record does not distinguish them.

Pronouncing Shannel
shuh-NELL
Two syllables with the stress at the back. The sh spelling makes the first consonant unambiguous, which the French ch does not for an English reader; this is one of the cases where the respelling is more accurate than the original.

Fashion outlook
Shannel sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The spelling matches the sound exactly, which the name it is based on does not in English.
- Nell is a complete, old, entirely usable name sitting in the second half.
- Final stress gives the name a definite finish and makes it carry when called.
- Shanel, Shanelle, Chanel and Channel are all in circulation, so spelling it out is permanent.
- The luxury association travels with the sound whatever the spelling, and is unavoidable.
- The name is closely dated to the last decades of the twentieth century.
